Honoring A Legacy: H.T. Smith Street Naming Ceremony

On February 28, 2025, history was made at the NFL YET Center at Gwen Cherry Park as the community came together to celebrate the street naming in honor of H.T. Smith, a trailblazer, civil rights attorney, and dedicated advocate for underserved youth. This momentous occasion was not just about naming a street, it was a tribute to the vision, hard work, and passion that H.T. Smith poured into making Gwen Cherry Park a beacon of opportunity for the children it serves.

A Legacy Built for the Next Generation

H.T. Smith’s impact on Gwen Cherry Park extends far beyond his leadership as Chairman of the Gwen Cherry Park Foundation. He played a pivotal role in raising private funds, building the NFL YET Center, and donating this youth center to the Miami-Dade County Parks Department for the benefit of the children in our community. The Foundation has led efforts to provide positive programs in academics, athletics, music, health and wellness, financial literacy, and mentorship programs that empower children to reach their full potential. Through H.T. Smith’s relentless advocacy and commitment, he helped establish programs that have uplifted thousands of young lives, giving them access to resources, opportunities, and a safe place to grow.

Celebrating a Well-Deserved Honor

The naming of H.T. Smith Street is more than a recognition, it is a symbol of the lasting impact one person can make when they dedicate themselves to serving others. It is an honor to play a role in sharing this story and supporting the Gwen Cherry Park Foundation in its mission to continue his legacy. This was a joyous celebration that was participated in by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Commissioner Marleine Bastien, Commissioner Keon Hardemon, and Commissioner Kionne McGhee.

This event serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role nonprofit organizations play in uplifting communities. The work of the Gwen Cherry Park Foundation, inspired by H.T. Smith’s vision, continues to create opportunities for underserved youth, ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Recognizing and celebrating these efforts helps to inspire even greater community engagement and lasting impact.
