Gwen Cherry Park Black Cultural Museum

Gwen Cherry Park Black Cultural Museum

Knowing the past opens the door for the future. From February 17th-25th, 2021, the Gwen Cherry Park’s multi-purpose room was transformed into a museum showcasing the park’s history, Liberty City’s history, and Black culture. The attendees learned of the life of Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, the first Black woman to practice law in Dade County, Florida, and the first Black woman legislator in the state of Florida. The attendees were inspired by Martin Luther King’s commitment to racial equality and peace. They learned about the creativity of Madame CJ Walker who rose from poverty to become one of the wealthiest African American women of all time. They were moved by the writings of Langston Hughes, Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and Maya Angelou. Drawing inspiration from the past will give our children tools that will help them navigate through life. The event was highly informative and served as an amazing way to further the children’s knowledge of Black History.
