11 Feb Black Athletes Field Day
As the great Serena Williams once said, “We have to be thankful, and we also have to be positive so the next Black person can be number 1 on that list… Maybe it’s meant to be the next person to be amazing, and I’m just opening the door. Zina Garrison, Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, and Venus opened so many doors for me. I’m just opening the next door for the next person.”
Providing tools to pave the way for the next Black athlete is one of the goals of the NFL YET Center at Gwen Cherry Park. On February 10th, 2021, the NFL YET Center hosted an educational Field Day Event. There were different sports stations set up to honor Black athletes who excelled in football, track, tennis, and soccer. There was also a station set up in honor of the World’s Strongest Man/Woman. The field day gave the children a chance to showcase their athletic pride, celebrate our Black sports heroes, and spend a day being active. There were 52 kids in attendance, and each child was given a medal for participation.
