VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS UNITE TO COMMEMORATE MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. THROUGH SERVICE PROJECTS
Miami-Dade School Board Member and civil rights activist Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall will participate in the closing ceremony and luncheon, provided by Cabot Creamery’s “The Farmer’s Gratitude Grille”
(MIAMI, January 13, 2015) – The life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement will be the motivation behind more than 500 volunteers expected to participate in the the MLK Day of Service, Saturday, January 17, at Gwen Cherry and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Parks.
Hosted by Miami-Dade Parks and the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade, in partnership with AARP, Cabot Creamery, Miami Dolphins Special Teams Driven by Chevy, Florida International University, and the Miami Dade College Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy, the event kicks off with volunteers participating in various beautification projects, including painting, planting, and cleaning, making a difference in two community parks.
The event will conclude with a closing and reflective ceremony featuring Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, former recipient of the Civil Rights Advocacy Award, presented by the Florida Commission on Human Relations. In addition, Cabot Creamery will make its first South Florida appearance with its “The Farmers’ Gratitude Grille,” that tours the nation providing lunches to thank volunteers for their service to the community.
